Wits unions want new pay talks

Unions at the University of Witwatersrand have urged management to resume pay talks, a week after a one-day strike on campus.

They said on Tuesday they had not heard from management since negotiations broke down last week.

The unions involved are the Academic Staff Association of Wits University (Asawu), the Administration, Library and Technical Staff Association (Altsa), and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu).

“The disciplined and principled resolve demonstrated by the unions has been met with stony silence from management,” the three unions said in a joint statement.

Asawu wants Wits to pay its academics at a rate more competitive when compared to other universities. Altsa and Nehawu are demanding a nine-percent increase for support staff. Academics are also seeking more funds for research.

Wits could not immediately be reached for comment.

Last week, Wits vice-chancellor Loyiso Nongxa accused unions of walking out of negotiations. - Sapa
