President Jacob Zuma is expected to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) at the weekend, an official said on Thursday.

He would preside over the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a hydropower project, alongside DRC President Joseph Kabila, international relations spokesman Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

The Grand Inga Project, with an estimated capacity of 40,000mW and the potential to change the African energy sector, would increase Africa's generation capacity.

“This will enhance energy access to clean and efficient energy across the continent and contribute significantly towards a low carbon economy and economic development,” Monyela said.

The MoU was a product of talks between the two governments and will be signed by Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters, and her Congolese counterpart.

Zuma has instructed that talks about a treaty to give effect to the MoU should begin without delay and be completed within the next six months, Monyela said. - Sapa
