South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu) members have embarked on a strike demanding wage increases in Cape Town.

The union said on Monday clothingits members have been on strike over wages since last week, following failed wage talks with clothing company Queenspark.

Workers are demanding a 15 percent wage increase while the company has only offered 6 percent, with workers earning around R4 800 per month.

Sactwu said its members rejected Queenspark’s offer and voted overwhelmingly to go on strike.

“Annual wage negotiations have deadlocked and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has failed to resolve the dispute. The CCMA issue a certificate of non-resolution of the dispute on October 18, and Sactwu issued a 48 hour notice of action,” said the union in a statement.

The union said its doors were still open for negotiations.
