Durban - Absa is working around the clock to fix a computer system bug that has created problems for customers at ATMs.

Several customers complained on the website www.downdetector.co.za that they were having problems paying accounts via ATMs.

Len Swart posted on the site that when he tried to pay beneficiaries at an ATM the system “just hangs”.

Monica Muller said she was unable to perform inter-account transfers although she had sufficient funds in her bank account.

Absa spokesman, Dante Mashile, said the bank had identified a “system bug” affecting some customers who were trying to make beneficiary payments via the bank’s ATMs.

“This problem is only affecting customers who are transacting on our ATMs and who have 10 or more beneficiaries linked to a card. The impact is that they are unable to pay any of their beneficiaries.

“They are still able to perform other banking transactions for example withdrawals, deposit, purchasing of prepaid airtime and CashSend,” Mashile said.

Mashile said customers who had fewer than 10 beneficiaries could still perform all other transactions successfully at ATMs.

“Our IT team has been working around the clock and has identified the root cause of the problem. We recognise the inconvenience caused for our customers and are committed to ensuring that we find a solution in the shortest possible time,” Mashile said.

“Absa apologises for the inconvenience that customers have experienced over the past few days. We advise customers affected to please conduct their beneficiary payments on Absa online site or on our banking app,” he said.
