Absa makes 3 senior appointments

Absa Group (ASA) on Tuesday announced three senior appointments‚ bolstering its management capacity to deliver on the “One Africa” strategy and adding impetus to its drive to become the ‘Go-To’ bank across the continent.

Following the announcement late last year of Craig Bond as the new Chief Executive of Retail and Business Banking‚ Africa‚ the Barclays majority-owned financial services provider has announced the appointment of Zweli Manyathi as the new Head of Business Markets‚ Africa‚ covering both Barclays and Absa.

Manyathi has over 25 years banking experience in Africa‚ working for FNB and more recently Standard Bank‚ as Head of Business Banking South Africa.

“Manyathi brings a deep understanding of the needs and expectations of Business Banking clients and will lead the team towards our goal of becoming the ‘Go-to’ bank for our business clients across Africa‚” said Maria Ramos‚ Group Chief Executive and Chief Executive Africa‚ Barclays.

Bobby Malabie‚ the former Chief Executive of Absa’s Retail and Business Banking‚ South Africa‚ takes on a new‚ strategic pan-African role on the Africa Executive Committee as Africa Group Executive responsible for Marketing‚ Communication‚ and Public Affairs‚ effective immediately. He will also sit on the Absa Executive Committee. Malabie’s previous experience in managing both business and marketing functions positions him uniquely for this important role.

Malabie’s role includes Public Affairs‚ a new portfolio.

“This role is going to become even more important following our proposal to acquire Barclays businesses in eight African countries‚” added Ramos.

Absa also announced the appointment of Sarah Louw as the new Chief Human Resources Executive‚ Africa. She comes with a wealth of experience‚ most recently working for mining conglomerate Anglo American Corporation. Louw will report jointly to Ramos and the interim Barclays Human Resources Director‚ and will be a member of the Absa Executive Committee‚ the Barclays Africa Executive Committee and the Barclays Human Resources Leadership Team. Louw will be joining Absa in mid-March.
