The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) had lost its recognition status at Samancor Western Chrome mines outside Mooinooi in North West, the company said.

“We confirm that Amcu was derecognised as of July 1, 2014, as their membership fell to under the threshold limits for group recognition,” spokeswoman Sunel Pretorius said yesterday.

She said the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and trade union Uasa were recognised unions at the Western Chrome mines.

Amcu dethroned NUM as a dominant union in the platinum belt in 2012.

The union would forfeit its rights, such as having shop stewards and holding mass meetings at the company, she said.

Amcu national office bearers were not available for comment.

However, North West regional organiser Zolisa Bodlani said when asked about the derecognition: “I am not aware of it. As such I cannot comment.” – Sapa
