Johannesburg - Amcu members at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) in Rustenburg will strike on Friday in protest against the company's plans to retrench 3300 workers.
At the end of August, the company announced it would retrench 3300 workers as part of a restructuring, with a further 1600
workers offered voluntary severance packages.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said it would strike over the Amplats dismissal notices delivered on September 2.
The strike comes as negotiations about the retrenchments between Amplats and unions at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) broke down earlier this year.
On Thursday, police met Amcu and municipal officials ahead of the strike.
“All we are looking for is to ensure the members taking part in the strike (get) to exercise their democratic right, but also respect the rule of the law,” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
“We are ready. Our role will be to monitor the situation and they know what is expected of them.” - Sapa
