Johannesburg - Scammers were targeting Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) in fake tender and supply deals, it said yesterday.

The company said: “(Amplats) wishes to alert suppliers of a scam in which fraudsters pretending to represent (Amplats), or one of its operations, attempt to secure industrial products via a fraudulent Request for Quotations. The fraud is typically conducted through an email, which appears to come from (Amplats), confirming a false order and noting that payment will be made once the products are delivered and inspected, following which the scammers intercept and steal the order.”

Media manager Mpumi Sithole said Amplats had recently become “the focus of phishing and procurement-related scams. The email may look convincing. But, you’ll know it’s fraudulent if the email address is different to this format: [email protected]; it is asking for upfront deposits, security deposits or fees for accessing tender documentation. (Amplats) would never do this.”

Shares gained 0.4 percent to R310.25 yesterday.
