FNB might have a hard time defending its “You Can Help” campaign that saw it lock horns with the ANC.

The ANC will be confronting the bank at its headquarters in Johannesburg today about the online and TV adverts to which the party objected, saying it was a treacherous attack.

The ANC requested the meeting with FNB and Sizwe Nxasana, the chief executive of FNB’s holding company First Rand, is expected to lead the bank’s delegation.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe will lead the ANC delegation.

“We want to understand what informed their decision to embark on such a campaign. We want to understand the objective behind these adverts because what they say they intended doing is different from what the [adverts] look like,” said ANC’s head of communication Keith Khoza. The advert shows a pupil from Naledi High School in Soweto reading young people’s hopes for the country. The Advertising Standards Authority reportedly also received a complaint from a member of the public. – Londiwe Buthelezi
