Aquarius Platinum halts work after mine death

Johannesburg - Aquarius Platinum suspended operations at a Kroondal mine shaft in South Africa after a fatal accident from a fall of ground, the company said in a statement.

A team leader at the Kwezi shaft, Pedro Nhabinde, was killed in the October 11 incident.

“Management has suspended operations at Kwezi shaft pending a technical review of the area,” Aquarius said.

The Kroondal mine, located northwest of Johannesburg, is Aquarius Platinum’s flagship operation, producing 203,249 ounces of platinum group metals last year, according to a company website.

The shares slid as much as 6 percent, the most in intraday trading since August 1, and were down 2.5 percent at 3.46 rand by 9:39 am in Johannesburg. - Bloomberg News
