Basil Read has secured two projects, including a contract for further work at the Medupi power station project, that are collectively worth more than R400 million. The company said yesterday that the contract for further work was to be executed over 20 months and for phases one and two of the excess coal stockyard. It said the project comprised 965 000 cubic metres of bulk earthworks, 437 000 cubic metres of layer works and 1.1 million square metres of geosynthetic installation and would require 23 000 tons of bentonite, a natural clay used in the making of a seal in a soil layer. The second project was awarded by the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) for the rehabilitation of 10km of the N8 from Kloofeind to the Haldon Road interchange in the Free State. The project was set to commence on Friday and included pavement strengthening with road widening and drainage improvements. Shares slumped 4.58 percent to close at R7.70. – Roy Cokayne
