The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) has granted two additional licences to the Mobile TV consortium to test mobile television using a South Korean system in towns which include East London and Durban. The licences would also allow for trials in Port Elizabeth and Pietermaritzburg over the next six months, the consortium said yesterday. “These service area licences follow that already granted for Cape Town and Bloemfontein and surrounding areas,” said Mothobi Mutloatse, Mobile TV’s founder and chairman. The consortium intends to offer sports, entertainment, news and short programming on radio using the Korean Digital Multimedia Broadcasting technology. The standard competes against the digital video handheld broadcasting system, on which MultiChoice launched DStv Mobile in 2011. – Asha Speckman
