Cell C cuts data prices

Cell C, South Africa’s third largest mobile operator, said it had halved prices for some of its popular data packages as part of a promotion which is expected to run until the end of July.

Alan Knott-Craig, chief executive at Cell C, said the promotion was part the service provider’s “first shot” at offering the consumer a better deal.

The promotion includes price cuts on two postpaid packages and one prepaid package.

Cell C was offering a 24GB SIM-only package for R1 299 once-off, down from R1 999.

And, customers who wished to include a speedstick with a maximum theoretical capability of 21.Mbps on the same package would pay R1 999 once off, down from R 2 999.

Postpaid customers had a choice between a 500MB SIM-only package for R49 a month down from R109 a month, or include a speedstick with a maximum theoretical capability of 7.2 Mbps for R69 a month.

The 2GB SIM-only postpaid package was reduced to R99 a month from R279 a month or R119 a month including a 7.2 Mbps speedstick.

“Today’s world demands a data platform with affordable rates, so we have constructed a set of data tariffs which we hope will meet the needs of South Africa on our HSPCA + data network using the superior 900MHz band,” said Knott-Craig.

Cell C said that existing rules applied to data packages with an out-of-bundle rate of 39 cents/MB.

“Customers can use data as and when they want without fear of speeds being throttled or usage limited to certain times of the day,” the company said in a statement.
