Johannesburg - Cell C, South Africa’s third-largest mobile-phone operator, may reduce its workforce by about 13 percent to streamline the business.

The proposed cuts could affect as many as 190 employees, the Johannesburg-based company said in a statement today.

The reduction is a result of a restructuring within the company’s commercial department, according to union Solidarity.

“Cell C can confirm that it is in the process of consultation in respect of possible retrenchments consequent to a restructuring in certain areas of the company,” the company said.

Some staff may be offered new roles, Cell C said.

South Africa’s communications regulator this month scaled back a planned reduction in the cost of calling other mobile networks after opposition from the biggest operators, Vodacom and MTN.

The new fees, which are intended to help smaller operators compete with the two market leaders, will probably be challenged legally by Cell C, according to chief executive Jose dos Santos.

Cell C will finalise the process by the end of January, Solidarity said in a separate statement. - Bloomberg News
