Johannesburg – The Gupta family-owned news television channel, ANN7, was the worst employer in South Africa, according to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).

“Indeed we have (ANN7) workers here, some of them are our members. We are sending a message to them (ANN7), that for them to be recognised, they must follow processes and pay workers correctly, and resolve all the issues affecting their workers,” Cosatu president S’dumo Dlamini said on Tuesday at the federation’s 12th congress taking place in Midrand.

The news channel beat other “bad employers” such as Telkom, the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg and television channel e.tv, said Cosatu second deputy president Zingiswa Losi.

In a labour dispute ruling that involved ANN7 in September, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) ruled that the channel did not follow correct procedures when it dismissed journalist Asanda Magaqa.

The channel, owned by Infinity Media, was instructed to reinstate Magaqa and back pay her an amount of R500,000.

Magaqa was dismissed by the channel in November last year.
