Johannesburg - DHL Express had appointed Hennie Heymans as the managing director of its sub-Saharan Africa region effective from Thursday (October 1), the company said in a statement yesterday.

In his new role, Heymans would oversee 51 countries and territories, more than 3 500 employees and 250 facilities, five regional hubs and 14 dedicated DHL aircraft, it said.

Heymans joined DHL Express in 2001 as the head of the direct business unit, supervising telesales, agents and retail in Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho. He was appointed the managing director for central Africa, and later became the managing director for central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, before taking up his current role of the managing director for the South African region in January 2013.

“Hennie has consistently delivered on some tough targets despite the sometimes uneasy economic climate,” Ken Allen, the global chief executive of DHL Express, said.
