Gold miner DRDGold (DRD) said on Friday that an employee injured in this morning's bus accident at its Blyvooruitzicht mine near Carletonville died soon after admission to hospital.

This brings to eight the number of employees who died in the accident.

It is understood that about 37 other employees have been injured.

A number of emergency rescue services were involved in transferring the injured to various local hospitals. The number and condition of the injured would be confirmed as soon as possible, the company said.

The bus, operated by a transport company under contract to the mine, was transporting day-shift workers from the mine's hostel to its No 4 Shaft when the accident occurred. The cause of the accident is not yet known. - I-Net Bridge
