The former head of the SA Broadcasting Corporation's (SABC) legal services was granted bail of R15,000 by the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, the Hawks said.

Advocate Mafika Sihlali handed himself over to the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation's office in Johannesburg earlier in the day, said Colonel McIntosh Polela in a statement.

“On arrival, Sihlali was arrested on charges of fraud and corruption.”

Sihlali, who was appointed to the SABC on August 1 2006 and held the post for two years, allegedly outsourced legal services to a company belonging to his friend.

This was despite the SABC having sufficient capacity to handle these services.

Sihlali allegedly received R2.5 million from his friend through a football club account he held.

“We have also extended an invitation to advocate Sihlali's friend to hand himself over to face similar charges, failing which he will be tracked down and arrested,” Polela said.

Sihlali was expected to appear in court again on February 29. - Sapa
