Johannesburg - Gidani has lost its latest bid to win back the national lottery after the North Gauteng High Court ruled against it in its ongoing bid to win back the lottery licence.

This is according to current licence holder Ithuba, which on Tuesday said it was pleased with the court’s decision to dismiss Gidani's application for leave to appeal.

The appeal was dismissed with costs.

Gidani's latest application is a sequel to a number of unsuccessful attempts by to claim an entitlement to operate the National Lottery. It had argued that Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies unlawfully awarded the contract to Ithuba.

Ithuba was issued its original operating licence in October 2014, it was then declared invalid and set aside after a High Court application by Gidani.

Davies reinstated the licence in August 2015 after the court gave him a month to correct irregularities in the licensing agreement.

Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza notes Ithuba has, so far, sold more than 500 million tickets since taking over the lottery, and paid out more than R2.4 billion to winners.

“Ithuba is delighted that the National Lottery is seeing increasing player participation.”
