Gigaba vows to name SAA chief by next month

Public Enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba had given an assurance that a new chief executive for the troubled SAA would be in place next month, City Press reported yesterday.

But Gigaba said replacing the suspended acting chief executive Vuyisile Kona was not the silver bullet and would not solve the airline’s problems.

Kona, who was placed on “precautionary suspension”, is suspected of contravening the Public Finance Management Act.

SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali told Business Report last week that: “The substance of suspension relates to the contravention of the act during some procurement processes.”

It was previously reported that Kona had refused to go.

Gigaba said the outcome of an investigation into Kona’s conduct would be announced and followed by a disciplinary process.

He said the suspension did not mean there was a crisis at SAA, saying that operations had not been affected. – Nompumelelo Magwaza
