Gold Fields miners back at workComment on this story
Johannesburg - Mine workers who ended a strike at Gold Fields' KDC mine on the West Rand have returned for the night shift as agreed, the mine said on Thursday.
“Yes, they (the mine workers) did. We had around 95 percent attendance for the night shift as well as our day shift, which started this morning. Things are back to normal,” said spokesman Sven Lunsche.
About 12,000 employees returned to work after the strike was resolved when the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) national leadership met NUM members on the mine.
The meeting was to resolve difference between them and local NUM branch leaders.
Gold Fields CEO Nick Holland commended the NUM's national leadership on Wednesday, in particular its president Senzeni Zokwana and general secretary Frans Baleni, for their bold leadership in resolving the strike.
Holland said the mine could not condone the unlawful nature of the strike, and was pleased that the matter had been resolved.
