GOLD Fields, which operates South Deep, a R8.8 billion mechanised gold mine south of Johannesburg, has appointed a new company secretary. Gold Fields said on Friday that its company secretary, Taryn Harmse, would step down with effect from September 15 to concentrate on her role as executive vice-president for general counsel. Lucy Mokoka, MTN South Africa’s company secretary, would replace Harmse, the company said. Mokoka’s appointment is effective from September 16. The US Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the empowerment deal set up to secure a mining right at South Deep amid allegations of bribery. – Dineo Faku
