Johannesburg - Workers at the Lanxess chrome mine in Rustenburg are still on strike, the mine said on Wednesday.
“The illegal strike activities continue today (Wednesday),” mine spokeswoman Sibonile Dube said in a statement.
On Tuesday night, regional representatives of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) rejected an offer made by the mine.
“The proposal consisted of an additional payment which would recognise the efforts of the workforce in terms of safety and production,” Dube said.
Talks between the mine's representatives and the unions were continuing.
Miners want an annual performance increase which they claim was approved by the company's head office in London in 2011.
Cosatu said bonuses should not be shared only by management.
“The management have been sharing this money among themselves and excluding the real workers who have made the company what it is today,” Cosatu North West spokesman Solly Phetoe said in a statement.
“The chairman of the board issued a letter to all employees world-wide that indicated the company is doing well in 2012 and that all employees must share the EU115 million (about R1.4bn) in the annual performance payment of 2012.”
Phetoe said no worker should be dismissed for the illegal strike.
Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said the situation had quietened down.
On Monday, 10 strikers at the mine were wounded when mine security fired rubber bullets at them.
Ngubane said the group had gathered at the mine early on Monday morning and confronted security personnel, who responded by firing rubber bullets. - Sapa
