Impala platinum (IMP) announced that six employees at its Rustenburg mine were brutally assaulted on Thursday evening, and that they are being treated at the mine's hospital.
The company added that an unidentified body of a badly beaten man was discovered by the South African Police Service in Freedom Park. It is believed the man worked as a contractor at the mine.
“We are appealing to those on the illegal work stoppage to return to work in order to have their grievances and demands considered,” the company said.
Spokesperson Johan Botha told I-Net Bridge/BusinessLIVE that the company had lost an estimated 100,000 ounces of platinum production in the past five weeks while workers downed tools.
Impala has called for a high level meeting with Cosatu and the National Union of Mineworkers (Num), to take place this Friday afternoon. - I-Net Bridge
