A group of workers aligned to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) have demanded a 10 percent pay increase, Impala Platinum Holdings said on Monday.
Spokesman Johan Theron said: “The Amcu-aligned interim workers' committee demanded the 2012 wage agreement be brought forward again.”
Earlier this year, Implats received a similar demand from the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
The wage agreement arrived at for 2011 and 2012 granted A-level employees a 10 percent increase, B-level employees a nine percent increase and C-level employees an eight percent increase.
The 2012 wage increase was due in July, but was brought forward to April after workers embarked on a strike.
Theron said following talks with the interim workers' committee and the NUM, Implats re-graded the composition of the workforce and granted market adjustments to those workers in other categories.
“We engaged with NUM and the agreement came forward, a little earlier, which dealt with that.”
This apparently addressed the concerns of the striking workers at the time and business at Implats resumed.
However, last week the interim workers' committee approached management to demand that the same agreement be enacted now.
“We are engaging with them, trying to find out what informs the demand and we are trying to find a resolution to the impasse,” Theron said.
