Johannesburg - Independent Media bagged six awards at the first WAN-IFRA African Digital Media awards held in Johannesburg on Thursday.

IOL took first place for the 'Best use of Online Video” for “What would you take a bullet for?” and was placed runner up for Best News Website.

IOL also tied first with the Mail & Guardian for 'Best in Tablet publishing'.

Independent Media's sister company Condé Nast also came in second place for 'Best Lifestyle Website' and 'Best Entertainment Lifestyle Mobile Service' for House and Garden.

Independent's Loot and Isolezwe took second place for 'Best New Production'.

“Given the strong contenders for best news site, I am proud of the IOL team for their commitment to breaking news. The award confirms IOL's place as one the top news websites in Africa. As a group Independent Media produces some of the best news content on the continent. The WAN-IFRA's African Digital Media Awards celebrate those who have “adopted digital media and mobile strategies as part of their total product offering”. This, with the objective of embracing the major changes in how people consume news and information.
