Johannesburg – The KwaZulu-Natal Meter Taxi Alliance on Monday accused Uber of operating in the country illegally, claiming they do not pay taxes like other operators are required to do.

Speaking on UkhoziFM radio station, the alliance’s spokesperson Sizwe Mvube said Uber’s rates were also cheaper, affecting the metered taxi industry.

“We are charging R12 a kilometre, but they have gone down to R6.50 a kilometre. So, who can go down to R6.50 a kilometre? There are reasons why they have gone down to R6.50 per kilometre because they are not suffering like us. They don’t have cops involved in their business like us,” Mvubu told the radio station.

Mvubu also said the alliance would march through Durban on Thursday in protest against Uber.

Uber South Africa could not immediately be contacted for comment.

Meanwhile, the Taxify cab-hailing app also announced on Monday that it will relaunch in South Africa on Friday with a new business model to take on Uber and metered taxis.
