Johannesburg - Workers at the South African operations of platinum producer Lonmin have gone on a wildcat strike, a spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers said.

“All operations are down at Lonmin,” Lesiba Seshoka told reporters.

The strike appeared to stem from anger over the weekend killing of an organiser from the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu)

Lonmin confirmed that work at all of its South African shafts was suspended on Tuesday.

“Employees arrived at work but did not proceed underground. All 13 of the shafts are not operational,” said spokeswoman Sue Vey. - Reuters
