Rustenburg - Thousands of striking Lonmin miners and Marikana residents gathered on Monday at the hilltop where police opened fire on them last week.

Mine worker Zolisa Bodlani told colleagues that the government had claimed the Wonderkop hill was its property.

“Who is the government? We are going to meet at that mountain today (Monday),” Bodlani said.

A total of 34 workers were killed on Thursday when police tried to disperse a group gathered on the hill.

In the preceding week, 10 people were killed in violent protests at the mine.

At Monday's gathering, prayers were led by African Christian Democratic Party leader Kenneth Meshoe and other religious leaders.

“I pray for peace, wisdom and reconciliation. Let peace come out of this,” said Meshoe.
