Two mineworkers have been killed at Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu gold mine outside Carletonville, the company said on Tuesday.
“Investigations into the cause of the accident are underway,” spokeswoman Henrika Basterfield said.
The men died on Monday, but it was unclear how. Operations at the gold mine had been temporarily suspended pending an investigation. The company sent its condolences to the families.
The National Union of Mineworkers claimed the pair died in a “mud rush”.
“The NUM is especially angry at the rate in which miners lose their lives,” spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said.
On Friday, a worker died at the Impala Platinum mine in Rustenburg, and another at Harmony Gold's mine in the Free State, Seshoka said.
On Monday another two workers died at the Chemwerth mine in Klerksdorp when the shovel from a front-loader heavy vehicle fell on them.
