MTN Group says Ahmad Farroukh, the CEO of its South African unit, has resigned for personal and family reasons, Bloomberg reports.

The wire service quotes MTN CEO Sifiso Dabengwa as saying: “This was a difficult decision to take for Ahmad, but unavoidable.”

Farroukh will leave the strike-hit company at the end of this month.

MTN and the Communication Workers Union have been locked in a pay dispute, which has become increasingly violent, for more than a month.

The union had demanded a 10% wage hike and 12% bonus payment, while MTN was offering an 8% bonus payment.

Farroukh joined MTN to head up its South African operations at the end of last July, replacing Zunaid Bulbulia, who was promoted to group COO.
