The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has called off its strike action against mobile operator, MTN.

The union announced at a press briefing on Thursday morning in Braamfontein it had reached an agreement with the company on a number of demands which saw workers down tools for eight weeks.

According to the CWU, workers will receive 12 percent bonus payments, while casual workers will be converted to permanent. The union has, however, failed to conclude salary increases, saying it would do so within 30 days.

“Members are expected to go back to work within two days after the signing of the agreement,” said CWU general secretary, Aubrey Tshabalala.

The union has also lashed out at Telkom for allegedly disobeying a court order preventing the company from retrenching workers until an arbitration process is concluded.

The order by the labour court in Johannesburg this month also ruled that Telkom and organised labour should take part in an internal forum intended on cushioning the effects of the company’s retrenchment plan.

Telkom sought to cut 4400 jobs, but said it had withdrawn retrenchment notices issued to workers.

“It is our view that Telkom is hell bent on ensuring that 4 400 jobs are lost in this company. The company does this despite of the country’s imperatives as far as job creation is concerned,” said Tshabalala.
