Northam - Close to 1000 workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) protested outside Northam Platinum Mine’s head offices in Limpopo on Thursday over a number of concerns.

Workers handed over a memorandum to management objecting to “witch hunting, victimisation, suspensions” and unfairly charging of NUM members with misconduct.

The miners waited until the end of their working day to embark on the march ensuring that they don’t lose a day’s pay.

Tebogo Seatle told Independent Media that he was fed up with unfair promotions when he worked so hard.

"We are tired of the ill treatment of management."

Another employee, who refused to be indentified for fear of victimisation from the mine, said: "I am here today because management needs to listen to us now. We are tired of this mine not catering for transformation for black workers."

He said there was a lack of development and growth for workers at the mine.

"They are tampering with our growth development. They do not help us; they kill us and our members instead."

The protesters chanted during the demonstration that rival union Amcu should fall as it was not a union "for the people".
