Bloemfontein - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Friday said it planned to strike at Sishen Iron Ore Company's Kolomela mine in the Northen Cape over unilateral changes to conditions of service.

“We shall issue the company with a notice to strike very soon,” said Lucas Phiri, the NUM's regional co-ordinator in Kimberley.

NUM had approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) and it was awarded a certificate of non-resolution.

Phiri said the mine’s management has unilaterally changed shifts, leading to longer hours, without proper consultation.

“We did not want to strike, but the company has pushed us too far and we are now going to exercise our right to strike,” he said. - Sapa
