Seventy-one Palabora Mining workers remained in an underground sit-in following an unprotected strike by operations crews last Wednesday, the copper producer said yesterday. “This action by the crews is a significant concern and is in contravention of their obligations to the mine’s policies and the provisions of the Mine Health and Safety Act,” the company told the JSE, adding that the workers’ safety was at risk. National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said workers were demanding danger pay. NUM was not involved in the strike. Last October a Palabora worker died after being trapped underground while carrying out repairs on a blocked crusher. – Dineo Faku
