Retailer Pick n Pay (PIK) announced on Wednesday that CEO Nick Badminton would resign from its board effective the end of the financial year but would be available to assist the company and its chairman in the transition period.
During the global search for a new CEO, Pick n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman will move to executive chairman responsible for company strategy and working with the leadership team to embed the changes in the business, while preparing the company for succession.
Deputy CEO Richard van Rensburg will assume day-to-day operational responsibility, backed by the dynamic team of executives at the company to further implement changes in Pick n Pay.
The search will include internal candidates and external candidates, both local and international.
“When I came in as CEO, we became singularly focused on the transformation of Pick n Pay - this transformation was centred on winning with our customers. It included improving our product offer and our stores, which necessitated large investments in our operations, particularly the implementation of SAP and centralised distribution. We also converted Score to Pick n Pay. The most important and significant changes necessary to transform Pick n Pay have now either been made, or are well advanced in their implementation,” said Badminton.
“I feel that I've now completed what I set out to do and looking ahead, it's an appropriate time for the board to select a new CEO, and with the executive team, to continue rolling out and embedding the changes the business needs to make,” Badminton added.
“Nick had an incredibly tough job to do. It's difficult enough transforming a company of our size and scale to the degree required, but to run the business at the same time and right in the middle of what has been the most serious recession in decades - and with an international competitor coming in - was particularly tough.
“With his team, he has executed the turnaround extremely well, and during his tenure, there have been a number of particularly notable achievements and milestones which he led,” said Gareth Ackerman. - I-Net Bridge

Sean Summers is a retailer not an accountant, let an accountant run your business at your peril.

It's a management problem that starts at the top and extends all the way down into the stores. Ackermans should make Sean Summers an offer he can't refuse and then get out of the way. Gareth A is chairman for one reason only - he's the founder's son. PnP need a true shopkeeper at the helm

We have stopped going to PnP altogether. Goldman street store is a shambles, you can't find any thing, there is no method in the layout of the store. Flora Centre is always out of stock. As for complaining to the store manager, this person is never available. And to complain to the helpdesk, these people look at you as if you are either something the cat dragged in or you must be from outer space. Spar & Checkers gets all our business now.

I stopped going to Pick 'n Pay, lousy service levels and most of the staff don't greet and at the Cape Gate store every employee thinks hisher is a manager. The prices of products goes up before the weekend starts and in the middle of the week, it's gets lowered again. Sorry I prefer Checkers Cape Gate store. I think Pick 'n Pay has lost the plot. - Cheers

Over the past few months the service at Pinelands has become terrible. Never enough tellers, credit card machines that often don't work, staff that spend too much time talking. Time for a major shake-up is required, before we are also forced to go to shoprite.

The slogan of P&P seems to be the notices at the tills: Closed for now. I've never seen a shop where employees are allowed to give so little attention to shoppers, while chattering away with friends. The first step in transforming P&P should be DISCIPLINE among employees. Step 1.1 - during working hours you talk only shop to your co-workers...

Half of the stuff on Pick and Pay's shelves are not priced at all or priced incorrectly. I have brought this to the attention of store managers at various stores repeatedly, but often I am told that there is nothing that they can do about it because they get 'fresh produce delivered twice a day'. Why can the other big supermarkets get it right? Pnp is either sloppy or dishonest!

Anonymous 02:58 this has nothing to do with the CEO, there is an appointed Manager there to overlook things. If you as the customers don't exercise your rights and approach the person in charge to raise your concerns then nothing will happen. As far as I am concerned Pick n Pay is still the best supermarket after woolies.

I have friends in both Port Alfred and George who say Pick and Pay are so badly run, the shelves are not stocked the staff are rude and lazy and the shops are very grubby. Get your act together and change your staff to someone who will do the work they are payed to do

CEO Nick Badminton failed, during his reign share price has dropped, market share dropped, customer loyalty dropped. Numerous wage disputes, ridiculous bonuses to executives.

How the mighty P'nP has fallen. I grew up buying at P'nP but lately even Spar is a much better option for me. With Walmart around and the aggression of Shoprite, I would sugget they also get an overseas buyer otherwise the bigger boys are going to run them out of business. uncle Raymond must be considering a come back. Simple Fact, The Game has Changed and you remained behind
