Postal strike delays municipal accounts

Johannesburg - The posting of municipal accounts in Tshwane will be delayed as some postal service workers are on an illegal strike, the City of Tshwane said on Wednesday.

“Customers will receive their January 2014 statements late and in some cases after their usual due date,” spokesman Selby Bokaba said.

Municipal account holders were still responsible for paying their accounts, even if they had not received a statement.

Customers could pay their municipal accounts in accordance with their normal monthly consumption.

They could also receive duplicate invoices, of their accounts, at all City of Tshwane walk-in customer care centres.

E-mails and smses would be sent to customers if their contact details were on record.

The illegal strike began on Monday, SA Post Office spokesman Christopher Hlekane said.

The strikers were employed in the mail sorting centres. It was not clear how many were on strike.

“Sapo advises that the principle of no-work, no-pay will apply. The organisation will also deal with any incidents of intimidation accordingly.”

Hlekane said Sapo management was trying to resolve the workers' issues. - Sapa
