Johannesburg - A power failure has caused the interruption of railway export of coal from Richards Bay, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) and the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) said in a joint statement on Monday.

The RBCT suspended all its operations on Friday.

“The failure was caused when uMhlatuze Municipality experienced faults on both cables that feed the Hydra Substation which in turn feeds RBCT,” said the two companies.

“Although the export coal service has been suspended, the general freight business still continues unhindered.”

The TFR, RBCT, Eskom and the municipality were working to fix the system.

The system was expected to be partially functional within the next three days.

It would fully operational by the week ending February 9. - Sapa
