SA Coal halts Umlabu operations

Johannesburg - South African Coal Mining Holdings (SAH) says it has suspended mining operations at its subsidary Umlabu Colliery‚ and has placed the mine on a care and maintenance programme.

Consultations with the National Union of Mineworkers‚ facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration‚ were successfully concluded in December 2012 and operations suspended on 14 December 2012‚ it said.

A small staff has been retained to maintain the coal processing plant‚ as well as to ensure that the rehabilitation process proceeds‚ all environmental requirements and safety regulations are complied with and assets are secured‚ it said on Wednesday. - I-Net Bridge
