Johannesburg - National airline SAA on Thursday confirmed that it had signed a maintenance contract for Trent 700 engines that would power five Airbus A330 aircraft that were on on order.SAA said the contracts would enable the state-owned carrier on its current route network and improve its efficiencies.

SAA acting chief executive Musa Zwane said the contract came at a cost of just more than $1 million (R13.6 million) an engine a year, and was 20 percent less than that of maintaining the A340 engines.

“The contract assists further in SAA’s drive to reduce operating costs, and improving the financial position of the airline”, it said.

Zwane also said the contract was part of a TotalCare service deal focused on ensuring all maintenance would be performed and all material and manpower costs needed were covered for the life of the engine.

TotalCare also provides spare engine support warranties and guarantees and support during an aircraft emergency breakdown no matter where the aircraft is in the world.
