Johannesburg - Two days after the dismissal of SABC chief financial officer Gugu Duda, it has been announced that James Aguma will replace her in an acting capacity.

And Tian Olivier will be the new group chief executive officer.

Duda, who had been on suspension since 2012 was fired on Wednesday after the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) found her guilty of misconduct.

Duda was found by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to have been irregularly appointed after former communications minister Dina Pule interfered. Last month, SABC board chairwoman Zandile Ellen Tshabalala filed a labour dispute asking for Duda’s dismissal.

The submission was as part of the employer’s plea in aggravation after a “ruling on substantive guilt” was made in December by commissioner Kenny Mosime at a pre-dismissal arbitration hearing.

Tshabalala wrote in her submission that Duda had been found guilty of serious acts of misconduct, among them misleading outgoing group chief executive officer Lulama Mokhobo over a R1 million payment given to the inaugural ICT Indaba held in Cape Town in 2012.

Madonsela last month released a report on the public broadcaster entitled “When governance fails” and pointed out irregular employment practices, massive financial losses and unlawful conduct at the state broadcaster, mainly focused around the conduct of acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Announcing Aguma and Olivier’s appointments, Tshabalala said: “The SABC will expedite the process of filling the vacancies of the GCEO and the CFO and other critical and senior positions within the organisation.”
