Sasol, the world's biggest maker of fuel from coal, tops the gainers' list on South Africa's blue-chip index, rising nearly 2 percent on the price of crude oil.

South Africa-based Sasol, which produces fuel cheaper than competitors but sells at the same regulated price, is up 1.8 percent at 346.38 rand.

Brent crude climbed above $98 per barrel on Tuesday as escalating tensions between Iran and the West offset concerns that gloomy manufacturing data from China, the United States and Europe will hurt oil demand. - Reuters
