Security was tight at Freedom Park near Rustenburg ahead of the arrival of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.

Armed police lined the road leading to the Freedom Park sports ground, while others stood near the sports ground, watching striking Impala Platinum mine (Implats) workers.

Inside the sports ground, marshals maintained order in front of the podium where Malema would speak.

A police helicopter circled above the crowd.

Malema was expected to hold a consultative meeting with striking Implats workers relating to working conditions in the mine.

The meeting is part of the ANCYL's programme on the nationalisation of mines.

North West premier Thandi Modise and Rustenburg mayor Mpho Khunou were also expected to speak to the workers. - Sapa
