Telkom’s R449m fine to be contested

Telkom would appeal the Competition Tribunal’s recent ruling that the fixed-line operator be fined R449 million, the state-controlled telecoms group said yesterday. It has filed a notice of appeal and has 40 days to file a record of appeal for the matter to be set down for a Competition Appeal Court hearing. The tribunal confirmed that Telkom had filed a notice of appeal on Wednesday. In its ruling published on August 7, the authority gave Telkom options to pay half the fine within six months. The other half could be settled within 12 months. The shares shed 1.36 percent to R19.63. – Asha Speckman
