Johannesburg - Telkom, South Africa’s biggest landline phone carrier, is cutting prices for mobile data and offering free calls and text messages in a challenge to larger wireless rivals MTN and Vodacom.

Telkom Mobile would offer smartphone packages ranging from R99 for 1 gigabyte of data to R999 for an unlimited deal, the company said after the market closed yesterday.

Two of the six new plans – all called FreeMe – include free text messages and free phone calls to any network, while the other four offer free calls to other Telkom customers.
