Johannesburg - Uber Technologies started the ride-hailing service in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Wednesday, adding a fifth sub-Saharan African country to its global network.

Accra is the eighth sub-Saharan African city to get the Uber service, and follows the introduction of operations in Uganda’s Kampala last week. The US company will also start in Tanzania later this month, the company said earlier this year.

“We see Accra as a natural fit,” Alon Lits, Uber’s general manager for sub-Saharan Africa, said in a statement. “Its people are willing to embrace innovation and technology and love products that are cool, exclusive, and offer a new experience.”

Uber, which allows passengers to summon cars using a smartphone app, now has a presence in 467 cities across the world. The company targeted Accra due to its population of more than four million people, it said.
