Trade unions must take decisive steps to counter the looming retrenchment of 14,000 workers by Anglo American Platinum, the Democratic Left Front said on Monday.

“The entire labour movement must be mobilised and placed on a war footing. Every effort must be made to support the elected workers’ committees... regardless of their union affiliation,” DLF spokesman Noor Nieftagodien said.

The DLF is made up of organisations which include trade unions, community-based organisations, socialist movements and individuals.

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) announced last week it could cut up to 14,000 jobs, close four shafts and sell a mine considered unsustainable as part of its restructuring programme.

Nieftagodien said retrenchments in the platinum sector were a reflection of a deeper crisis in the industry.

He said the mining industry should be nationalised under the control of workers and local communities in mining areas.

“Only then can production be planned on the basis of need rather than falling victim to the private corporations.” - Sapa
