Mobile phone operator Vodacom (VOD) saw a record increase in its customers of five million in the third quarter, pushing the number of subscribers past the 50 million mark.
Group customers rose by 27.3% to 52.9m in the quarter.
Overall group revenue rose by 12.2% to R17.997 billion while SA achieved a 25% increase in customers, ending the quarter at 32 million customers.
Group service revenue rose 11.2% in the period under review to R15.567 billion.
Over nine billion voice minutes were carried over the three month period.
"The success of our summer campaigns, targeted promotions and very attractive handset deals boosted customer additions, particularly in the rural areas," the company said.
The strong growth in customers and data usage helped offset the year to date reduction of 16% in both voice and data prices.
International operations maintained the positive momentum and accounted for more than 40% of the increase in total customers.
Network investment continued to be a major focus with on-going upgrades to Vodacom's transmission and radio access networks supporting the 41% increase in group data customers.
"Vodacom now delivers data connectivity to nearly 14 million people," the group added. - I-Net Bridge

Maybe this explains why a sms takes 6 - 12 hours to be delivered or received. Quite a nuisance when you are busy with internet banking. VODACOM WAKE UP AND UPGRADE YOUR CAPACITY FOR YOUR INCREASED USERS. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE 5 YEARS AGO!!!!!

I find these figures puzzeling. There are 50 Milion people in South Africa and what this is telling us is that forget about the other cell phone operators, but Vodacom has 64% of all of the population including babies. So that means that if you include the other Operators, every person including babies in this country must at least two or more phones. Highly unlikely to say the least.
