Newbury - Vodafone Group said its head of Europe, Philipp Humm, will step down as the mobile-phone carrier simplifies its management structure.

Humm will depart later this year to “continue his CEO career outside Vodafone,” Newbury, England-based Vodafone said in a statement Tuesday.

Starting October 1, Hannes Ametsreiter, Aldo Bisio, Jeroen Hoencamp and Antonio Coimbra, who run the businesses in Germany, Italy, the UK and Spain, respectively, will report directly to CEO Vittorio Colao.

Vodafone Netherlands CEO Rob Shuter will also join the group executive committee and assume additional leadership responsibilities for Vodafone’s smaller European markets.

Shuter was previously CFO of Vodacom, in which Vodafone has a 65% stake.

The changes are “intended to simplify organisational processes, enhance management efficiency and accelerate decision-making,” Vodafone said.

Vodafone is making the changes more than a month after saying it’s in talks to exchange assets with billionaire John Malone’s Liberty Global. Liberty owns cable assets including in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.K.
