South Africa's competition watchdog is seeking to increase a R444.5m fine against Telkom for uncompetitive behaviour.

The Competition Tribunal fined Telkom R449m in August for using its dominant position to block competition from other network service providers.

That was well below the R3.5 billion originally sought by the Competition Commission in its nearly decade-old complaint against Telkom.

The fixed-line operator is expected to file its appeal against the tribunal's decision next week.

Telkom had said a R3.5bn fine would be “catastrophic” and jeopardise its business. - Reuters
